Our current K-12 education system was built for a world that no longer exists and for a time when knowledge acquisition was far more important than knowledge application. To use the driver's license analogy, we are measuring whether they know the rules of the road and then handing them the keys without knowing if they can drive. It is time — long past time — to require them to show us they can drive. To build an education system that is not satisfied with what students can recall, but is relentless about what they can do. A system that holds itself accountable not for delivering instruction, but for producing genuine, demonstrable, real-world capability.
